Orchid Family: Orchidaceae. The orchid family is a very large group of monocotyledonous plants. It is one of the most recently evolved plant families. The division between species and species, in general, is not clear, and many intergeneric hybrids exist. Orchids are found in nearly all climate zones from arctic to tropical and on all continents except Antarctica. Many are native to tropical high altitudes and grow best in cooler temperatures year-round. There are two types: terrestrial and epiphytic. The seeds of orchids are very small, only the size of dust. The vanilla orchid is the original source of natural vanilla.
