RM50.00
Scientific name : Adenium obesum
Family : Apocynaceae
Common Name(s) : Desert Rose; Sabi Star; Impala Lily; Kemboja Cina; 富贵花
Commonly known as the Desert Rose, this species is native to parts of Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula. There are a few subspecies of this plant and they have been hybridised extensively to produce plants with varieties of flower colours and shapes. This plant exhibits glossy leaves and a thick succulent stem (caudex) that stores water. The often twisted, fat stem makes it a popular plant cultivated to a bonsai.
Being from the Apocynaceae family, this plant, like its cousins (Plumeria, Catharanthus, etc.), have a milky white latex when cut and this is poisonous to humans and pets if ingested.
The Mandarin name for the Desert Rose flower is 富贵花, fuguihua — fu means rich or abundant, gui is majestic, and hua is a flower. It is also popular belief that the larger the swollen ‘belly’ of the plant (the swollen stem), the more prosperous you will be. According to feng shui, the Desert Rose is an auspicious flower for every home. In Thai folk belief, it is said that one can obtain great benefit from the flower’s energy if you plant it on a Wednesday in the south-eastern part of your home.
